    Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

    The City of Groveport, Ohio, is central Ohio's small town. Groveport is a growing City in southeastern Franklin County. The community has a state of the art recreation and aquatic center, a world class golf course, an excellent arts and education program, several parks and a quaint Main Street historic area. We are looking for an Assistant Golf Superintendent to join our team and work closely with the staff at the Golf Course. This is an amazing opportunity with a very competitive starting salary and great benefits.

    SUMMARY: Assist the Golf course Superintendent with the daily maintenance of the golf course and property.

    QUALIFICATIONS:  An example of acceptable qualifications:

    Completion of secondary education or equivalent; two (2) years of golf course grounds keeping experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; must be able to be on-call 24 hours.

    LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  

    Must possess the ability to obtain first aid/CPR certification first available training session after hire; must possess Commercial Applicator certification; must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and maintain insurability under the Municipality's vehicle insurance policy.

    EQUIPMENT OPERATED:  The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

    Mowers, blowers, cup cutters, trimmers, sprayers, power and hand tools, golf carts, trucks, utility vehicles, chippers, cellular phone, personal computer, computer software, printer, copy machine, fax machine, and other standard business office equipment. 

    INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:  

    The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in an area in which means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms; is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., mowers, blowers, chain saw, trimmers, etc.); exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines (e.g., mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, sprayers, etc.); exposed to possible injury falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; works rotating shifts; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; frequently lifts objects 50 lbs or less; frequently carries objects 20 lbs or less; frequently pushes objects 50 lbs or less; frequently pulls objects 100 lbs or less.

    Note:  In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium to heavy work.

    JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

    JOB DUTIES in order of importance 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:  For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

    55%     (1)  Performs general golf course and facility upkeep (e.g., mows tees, fairways, greens, and rough;  rakes sand traps; lays sod; plants flowers, trees, and bushes; cuts holes, sets tee markers; waters tees, fairways, and greens; trims trees and bushes; performs maintenance on cart paths, benches, walkways, buildings, shelters, drinking fountains, restrooms, irrigation, and drainage systems, etc.); operates heavy equipment. 

    20%     (2)  Supervises grounds maintenance workers and seasonal grounds maintenance workers (e.g., assigns tasks to employees, serves as superintendent in the superintendent's absence, trains new employees in grounds keeping, resolves questions of grounds maintenance workers, etc.). 

    20%     (3)  Performs turf management (e.g., applies fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides; aerates tees, fairways, and greens; cuts greens; oversees selected areas of the golf course; etc.). 

    5%       (4)  Performs snow removal as necessary; services a variety of equipment as needed (e.g., mowers, trucks, edgers, chain saws, line trimmer's utility vehicles, golf carts, etc.).

    (5)  Maintains contact with vendors, the general public, and various government agencies/officials in order to obtain or disseminate information related to the essential position functions.

    (6)   Maintains required licensures and certification.

    (7)  Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

    (8)   Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

    Essential Functions & Responsibilities

    Course Maintenance & Operations

    • Assist in planning and supervising maintenance of all golf course areas including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, landscapes, and water bodies.

    • Direct daily work assignments and supervise grounds staff to maximize efficiency and meet member expectations.

    • Collaborate with the Superintendent to create, manage, and adjust daily maintenance schedules.

    • Serve as acting Superintendent during absences.

    Staff Leadership & Development

    • Instruct and train equipment operators on proper operation, care, and safety procedures.

    • Maintain accurate records of training sessions.

    • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and evaluating seasonal and full-time team members.

    • Support personnel management, performance evaluations, and employee safety initiatives.

    • Promote accountability, professionalism, and a positive team culture.

    Agronomic & Technical Responsibilities

    • Supervise pesticide applications and calculate proper product application rates.

    • Calibrate and operate pesticide application equipment in compliance with all regulations.

    • Supervise and participate in irrigation system maintenance, pump station operation, and drainage system upkeep.

    • Oversee maintenance shop organization, cleanliness, and safety standards.

    Professional Development

    • Participate in continuing education opportunities and industry events to remain current on agronomic practices and industry trends.

    • Play golf regularly to evaluate course conditions from the player’s perspective.

    • Propose and implement innovative ideas and improvement projects as appropriate for Tartan Fields Golf Club.

    Qualifications

    • Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or related field preferred.

    • Prior golf course maintenance experience required; supervisory experience preferred.

    • Valid pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe).

    • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

    • Working knowledge of irrigation systems, turfgrass management practices, and equipment operation.

    • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required in the golf industry.

    About You:

    Required

    • An associates and/or bachelor’s degree in Turf Management or a related field.
    • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Golf Course Maintenance.
    • A minimum of 1 year of experience in preparing and managing budgets for the golf course and landscape maintenance departments.
    • A minimum of 1 year of technical knowledge of all equipment, products, and resources related to golf course operations with the ability to implement these resources to meet or exceed company and club standards.
    • Current State Pesticide Applicators License or successfully completed within 90 days of employment.
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Preferred 

    • Thorough knowledge of general business administration practices and golf course operations practices and procedures.

This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the General Manager and overseeing agronomic operations across two championship-level Arthur Hills designed courses.

    Manual work in the cleaning, maintenance and minor construction of the City of Dayton golf course facilities and related areas.  Oversees and participates in the activities of employees involved in relevant tasks to maintain the golf courses in proper playing condition.  Work is occasionally inspected while in progress and upon completion by a technical supervisor.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Must meet one of the following:

    1. Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) AND currently employed for 6 consecutive months or more with the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position AND 3 years of experience in golf construction, irrigation and maintenance at a City of Dayton golf course; OR 

    2. Associates degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, or related field AND 3 years of experience in golf construction, irrigation and maintenance. 

    Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

    License Requirements

    Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

    Special Requirements

    Within 120 days of appointment, must obtain an Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) Pesticide license in the categories of Core, 6A and 8 and maintain as a term and condition of continued employment.

    Promotional Qualifications

    Must be a full-time permanent (or part-time permanent) employee in pay grade 116 (Wage) or below, pay grade 25 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.

    Open Competitive Applicants

    Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.  Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.

    Notes

    Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination.  Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

    Pay

     $24.72 per hour (Grade 117)

    Background Check 

    A background investigation is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

    Drug and Nicotine Testing 

    Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
