    Shady Hollow Country Club in Northeast Ohio is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to add to our professional maintenance team.  Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in all aspects of maintenance of the golf course and grounds.  Our main goal is to have a positive/safe atmosphere and provide an exceptional experience for our members. Future projects at the Club will be tree care, building a new sod nursery and installing a new irrigation system.
     
    Job Description:
    The Assistant Superintendent, as assigned, is responsible for executing grounds care programs which includes reporting deficiencies of turf, ornamentals, and trees, hardscape, equipment operation and other potential problems to Golf Course Superintendent. Operates a variety of equipment and tools for grounds maintenance and snow removal. Assists in developing and executing plans/actions to resolve all grounds maintenance issues. Operates and performs maintenance/repairs to grounds equipment as necessary. Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and programming of irrigation systems.

    Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

    • Maintains turf and landscape by applying knowledge and experience in performing all assigned grounds/course tasks. Operates a variety of equipment and tools including, but not limited to mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, string line trimmers, blowers, sweepers and other specialty grounds equipment. Operates pruning equipment to maintain trees and shrubs utilizing selective and formal pruning methods to maintain health and vigor of plants.
    • As assigned, is available to be on-call outside of normal working hours as part of a rotational schedule year-round.
    • Applies fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, aquaticides and insecticides. Must meet requirements of the Ohio Department of Agriculture as a licensed pesticide operator or under the direction of a licensed pesticide operator by completing ODA Trained Service Person. Documents and records such pesticide applications per ODA standards. Responsible for operation, calibration, and troubleshooting of application equipment.
    • Participates in annual and perennial landscape and bed preparation/ installation, maintenance, and transplanting including flowers, trees, shrubs, aquatic vegetation, and naturalized areas. Maintains health and vigor of plants. As applicable, takes direction from Leadership.
    • Performs duties associated with installation, maintenance and repair of drainage and irrigation systems. Performs programming and monitoring of irrigation systems to achieve optimal plant care resulting in conditions that meet the department standards.
    • Performs maintenance and repairs of grounds care equipment. As applicable, works under the direction of Mechanic
    • Assist/Lead crew members as directed by the Superintendent.
    • Operates heavy equipment such as loader, trencher, and skid steer.
    • Provides oversight and support of daily operations including the direction for other grounds workers. Provides training and shares knowledge regarding proper procedures and processes, equipment usage, daily operations, and OSHA and Shady Hollow safety compliance matters.
    • As directed, performs daily course setup such as changing cups and tee service.
    • Required to participate with snow removal operations. Operates necessary equipment for snow and ice removal.
    • Complies with OSHA and Shady Hollow safety requirements and other required training by Shady Hollow.
    • Achieves the high standards of quality, production, cooperation, and service set by Shady Hollow for our employees, and guests/members experience feedback and surveys.

    Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

    • A valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.
    • Must be at least 18 years old to operate heavy equipment/snow removal equipment.
    • 1 year of previous commercial landscaping and/or golf course experience including ability to operate maintenance and landscaping equipment.
    • Experience in mechanical repair and maintenance of grounds care equipment.
    • Ability to effectively communicate and receive instructions from leader, co-workers, and members both verbally and in writing.
    • High School Diploma, GED or commensurate experience.
    Physical Requirements (specific to the role)

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    • Ability to understand verbal instructions and read work orders and schedules.
    • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
    • Ability to maintain movement, bend, reach, lift and carry 50 pounds.
    • Ability to work outside and tolerate extreme weather conditions.
    • Ability to be on call outside of normal working hours as part of rotation schedule.
    • Ability to operate or be trained on a manual transmission vehicle within the parameters of the driving policy within one month of hire.
    • Ability to start and operate pull-start small engines.
    • Ability to climb steps and walk over varying terrain.

    Position: Golf Course Superintendent

    Facility: National Golf Links

    Location: South Charleston, OH

    Seeking a qualified individual to be responsible for the overall golf course operations and maintenance at National Golf Links (NGL) in South Charleston, Ohio. NGL is a family owned and operated golf course since 1995. The championship course is on 312 acres of rolling hills with several creeks and ponds. The responsibilities include turf grass/plant material maintenance, personnel management, chemical and pesticide applications and compliance of regulatory issues.

    Major Duties:

    • All activities associated with producing excellent playing conditions
    • Development and implementation of fertilizer, aeration and pest management program for turf grass and plant care
    • Develop maintenance budget and operating plan with input from owner/manager
    • Participate with the development and implementation of course improvement projects
    • Participate and or supervise equipment maintenance and repair
    • Works closely with Golf Professional as it relates to course conditions and outing set ups
    • Works closely with owner/manager

    Qualifications:                                                                                               

    • Turf Management degree preferred 2 or 4 years
    • Experience with irrigation systems
    • Experience with equipment maintenance and repair
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems, efficiently handle multiple duties under pressure with minimal supervision and work flexible hours including weekends as needed

    Compensation:

    $54,000 negotiable based on experience

    Position: Irrigation Specialist
    Facility: Ohio State University Golf Club
    Location: Columbus, Ohio

    Under direction of Golf Course Superintendent, plans, supervise, and participates in maintenance and repairs of golf course irrigation system. Responsible for basic electricity and electrical test equipment such as multi-meters, wire tracers, and locators. Oversight of the golf course irrigation system, including but not limited to: pumps, motors, sprinklers, valves, solenoids, and two wire irrigation system components.

    Responsible for the irrigation computer system and will help with programming, running, and troubleshooting any issues. Track and maintain all inventories for normal and emergency repairs and maintain accurate records of repairs.

    Assists with supervision, maintenance and repairs of all golf course grounds, buildings and machinery, including hand-watering, course setup, drainage installation, fertilizing, and some chemical applications.

    Position: Golf Course Superintendent
    Facility: The Club at Nevillewood

    The Club at Nevillewood and Community

    The Club at Nevillewood is a private, member owned country club with full membership.  The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is a unique layout in western Pennsylvania, and the centerpiece of an upscale community.  The Club is looking to replace the only Golf Course Superintendent in our 31-year history, who will be retiring this year.  The course was designed to be an enjoyable, yet challenging test of golf, and has a reputation for its excellent playing conditions. 

    The Club initiated a Master Improvement Plan in 2019 that included renovations to the first floor of the clubhouse, the pool area and the addition of a state of the art fitness building.  The upper two floors of the clubhouse are being renovated this winter.  The next phases of our Master Plan will include levelling the practice tees, installing mats and building/expanding a short game area in 2024.   

     

    Golf Course Superintendent Job Description:

    The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the management, planning, preparation and playing conditions on the 230-acre championship caliber golf course and the clubhouse grounds.  The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for all purchasing decisions for equipment and agronomic supplies, and therefore must possess the financial acumen necessary to prepare and manage a budget in excess of $2,000,000.  The GC Superintendent must be able to recruit, train, manage and motivate a cohesive team of 24 – 26 employees. 

    Strong planning and organizational skills plus a positive attitude are necessary for success.  He/she must be able to communicate effectively with members, other department heads, employees and vendors and be a visible presence among those groups. 

    The Golf Course Superintendent will report directly to the General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, while also working collaboratively with the Grounds Committee on course maintenance issues and to develop and implement upcoming course improvement projects. 

     

    Candidate Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will be a Golf Course Superintendent who has a proven track record for providing exceptional playing conditions and will have the following qualifications:

    • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent
    • Experience maintaining Poa annua greens in this climate and region
    • Knowledge of proper maintenance techniques for sand-based greens and tees
    • Adept at maintaining Bent/Poa annua fairways and Bluegrass roughs
    • Realize that the golf course is for the enjoyment of the membership and their guests
    • Understand the importance of course aesthetics, while knowing that firm playing conditions are more important than color
    • Collaborate effectively with the Golf Professional and other department managers
    • Appreciation for our golf course and club, with the vision to make it better
    • Proven agronomic skills and be current with advances in turf technology and equipment
    • Attention to detail for daily course preparation
    • Excellent leadership skills, capable of building a high-performing maintenance team
    • History of supervising and/or performing construction projects
    • Familiarity with golf course architecture and design concepts plus construction and maintenance trends
    • Capable of preparing and working within approved operational budgets
    • Solid irrigation and drainage management philosophy
    • Self-motivated, highly driven and a passion for their job
    • Strong strategic planning skills
    • Excel at member relations, able to articulate their plans and programs verbally and in writing
    • Listen and respond to club members and team members
    • Golfer/High golf IQ who understands ideal playing conditions and how to achieve them
    • Minimum of 2-year degree in turf management and valid pesticide certification
    • Knowledgeable in safety training and adherence to government regulations

     

    Budget:

    $2,100,000 operating budget for the golf course and grounds, plus capital for equipment, etc

    Salary and Benefits:

    $140,000 - $160,000 starting salary commensurate with experience.  Family health insurance including vision and dental, 401K with 2% match, vehicle allowance, Christmas bonus.  Dues + expenses for local, state, GCSAA conferences.

    Position: Equipment Manager
    Facility: Highland Meadows Golf Club
    Location: Sylvania, Ohio

    Highland Meadows Golf Club, located in Sylvania Ohio, is approximately one mile south of the Michigan and Ohio border and hosts the LPGA Marathon Classic annually. The club was founded in 1925 and designed by Sandy Alves. The club has recently completed a driving range renovation as well as a complete bunker renovation. The club is debt free and has a waiting list in all membership categories.

    The right candidate will work closely with the superintendent and the assistant to understand the daily needs of the course and staff.

    Job Requirments:

    Mechanical background preferably at a golf course, will train the right candidate on golf operations.

    Equipment Manager Job Description:

    • Daily repairs and PM on newer fleet of equipment.
    • Detailed record keeping of work and parts.
    • Ordering parts and keeping an inventory of common parts.
    • Maintain and repair new 52 cart electric fleet (lithium batteries).
    • Advise and budget on equipment purchases.
    • Work hard and appreciate quality of life outside of work.

    Salary Range/Benefits:

    • $45,000-$55,000
    • Uniforms, 401k, 80/20 health insurance, dues to local and national associations.
    • Course has own tools and will purchase new based on needs.

    Ideal candidates must have a genuine passion for agronomic practices and maintenance management. OHGC is owned by a closely held family oriented corporation, and ownership may be available for the right person. As Golf Course Superintendent, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and agronomic practices of the golf course and adjacent grounds, including the clubhouse landscaping and maintenance. Responsibilities also include overseeing the repair and maintenance of all golf course-related equipment.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintains all grounds including the golf course, clubhouse surrounds and other maintainable property
    • Supervises all planting, fertilizing and chemical applications, and other care of turf, plants, shrubs and trees on the golf course and clubhouse
    • Informs General Manager about present and future maintenance activities
    • Coordinates scheduling of all personnel assigned to the department
    • Communicates frequently with the General Manger to discuss activities, goals and plans
    • Prepares and manages annual budget plan for the golf course maintenance operation

    • Must have a current Ohio Pesticide License or must be able to attain one within 30 days of hire.   
    • Must Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Must be highly organized and efficient with a high attention to detail
    • Must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
    • Must have basic computer skills, Word and Excel

    Working Conditions

    • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50lbs occasionally
    • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception
    • Moderate exposure to extreme cold, heat, working outdoors, chemicals, pesticides, gasoline, vibration, pollen, dust, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards
