Egypt Valley Country Club (EVCC) in Ada, Michigan is seeking an accomplished Director of Agronomy to lead all golf course and grounds operations as the Club prepares for a significant period of capital investment and long-term planning. This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the General Manager and overseeing agronomic operations across two championship-level Arthur Hills designed courses.

Club Highlights:

  • Maintenance Budget: $1,800,000 (equipment excluded)
  • Annual Rounds: 44,000 (including ~5,000 outing rounds)
  • Staffing: 9 year-round employees; approximately 40 seasonal staff
  • Turf Types: Penncross bentgrass (greens & fairways), bluegrass/fescue/perennial rye (roughs), native tall grass areas
  • Irrigation System: $6,000,000 Toro irrigation system replacement planned for 2026
  • Equipment: All equipment owned; predominantly Toro
  • 10 golf course committee members (as well as 3 staff). The committee meets four times per year.

Future Projects:

  • $6,000,000 irrigation replacement (2026)
  • $3,500,000 Master Plan projects including bunker renovations, hole modifications, and replacement/removal of 95% of cart paths (2026)

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF THE POSITION:

  • Assume responsibility for daily course and grounds operations
  • Build strong relationships with existing staff and Club leadership
  • Evaluate and understand current fertility, chemical, and agronomic programs
  • Assess equipment fleet and operational efficiencies
  • Assist with team planning and staffing for the 2026 season
  • Balance time between field leadership and strategic evaluation
  • Collaborate with the retiring Golf Course Manager, who will remain as Project Manager for capital projects through Spring 2027

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND APTITUDE:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of all golf course and grounds maintenance operations
  • Directly manage and support Superintendents for each course, as well as the Mechanic and Horticulturist
  • Develop, manage, and monitor annual operating and capital budgets
  • Ensure agronomic practices align with the Club’s standards and long-term goals
  • Oversee planning and execution of major capital improvement projects
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, safety, training, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with the General Manager, Golf Course Committee, and other department heads
  • Represent agronomy operations in Golf Course Committee meetings (4 annually)
  • Maintain the highest standards of course conditioning and member satisfaction

PREFERRED / REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or related field (required)
  • Minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance leadership (4–7 years considered with strong qualifications)
  • Demonstrated experience managing large teams and complex budgets
  • Strong background in bentgrass management and northern climate agronomy
  • Experience with large-scale capital projects and irrigation systems preferred
